Dorchester School District Two

Dorchester District Two serving Charleston Air Force Base, SC is the fastest growing school district in the state according to recent state statistics. Currently serving more than 20,400 students, including those whose families serve our country at Charleston AFB, the school system is growing more than 900 students each year as families choose to make their homes in the Charleston AFB area because of the award-winning school system. We have eleven elementary schools, six middle schools, and two high schools currently serving the Charleston AFB area. It is a challenging yet exciting time for our district as all decisions and future plans are driven by student achievement and serving the needs of each student.

The Charleston AFB community provides outstanding support for our schools with over 500 partnerships and school volunteers. Ten schools have been named Red Carpet Schools by the State Department of Education in recognition of their family-friendly environment. Parent and community involvement is a critical component in the success of our schools. Three schools have earned certification as National Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence by National PTA.

Our schools and students excel in all areas of academic and extracurricular activities. Rollings Middle School of the Arts was named a 2007 Carolina First Palmetto’s Finest School joining five other district schools that previously received this designation as one of the best schools in the state. District Two received a four-year Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grant totaling nearly $900,000 from the U.S. Department of Education for the district Dorchester Arts Project. The district’s innovative Leadership Academy has received the prestigious Magna Award from the National School Board’s Association for this highly successful program that trains future administrators for district schools.

The Dorchester School District Two seven-member Board of Trustees works with district administration to offer challenging programs and curriculum and to recruit quality teachers for district classrooms. This has resulted in PACT scores ranked among the top in the state. The district’s SAT scores are above the state and national averages. The graduating class of 2007 was offered over $27 million in scholarships, including four students who received the prestigious Robert C. Byrd Honor Scholarship.

Over the past two years, District Two has focused on implementing a comprehensive and aggressive technology plan in all schools to enhance instruction and student learning. This initiative has resulted in our district becoming a state leader in technology. Last year, all elementary and middle school classrooms were equipped with interactive Smart Boards and LCD projectors as teaching tools to improve student achievement. High school classrooms will receive this technology before school begins in August. In addition, all teachers received laptop computers to allow them to utilize instructional software and to prepare lesson plans at home.

Our schools are an integral part of the fabric of the Charleston AFB community. We welcome the opportunity to share the Dorchester School District Two story with others serving Charleston Air Force Base, SC.
