A crucial link in force projection for the Air Mobility Command, the Charleston, South Carolina Air Force Base is a medium-size installation housing the 437th Airlift Wing. Team Charleston's mission is improving the global reach that makes the U.S. Air Force the most effective in the world.
On 3,500 acres within the North Charleston city limits, the base is 10 miles from downtown Charleston. As flying grew in popularity, regular air flights started in 1928 in Charleston. In 1941 the Army Air Corps took control of the field for use in anti-sunmarine missions. A clinic and the Charleston Naval Hospital provide health care.Base recreational opportunities include: bowling; pool; sport and fitness center; aero club; youth center; and tennis courts.

ACCESS TO INSTALLATION: BY CAR: Charleston AFB is located 10 miles northwest of the city of Charleston; it is part of the city of North Charleston. It is nestled between US Interstate 26 and Dorchester Road (SC Highway 642). The gates are staffed by Security Forces 24 hours.
BY PLANE: Charleston AFB and the Charleston International Airport jointly use the runways. After landing, take a short taxi ride around the airport to a base gate.
BY TRAIN OR BUS: One commercial bus line serves the Charleston area. There are two terminals; one in downtown Charleston and the other in North Charleston. Amtrack also serves the Lowcountry, and the station is located about three miles from the base in North Charleston.
TAXI service is available from all three stations. 100% ID check is required. Due to security issues, only taxi drivers with a valid Department of Defense ID card will be permitted to enter the base so be sure to ask for a driver that has an ID card.
Base Transportation
Charleston AFB does not have a shuttle bus service. However, the Base Transportation Office may be able to provide transportation for official business in certain circumstances, i.e., members in TDY status, air crews.
